UN praises automaker at the World Ocean Festival

President of UN General Assembly Praises Toyota’s Commitment to Sustainable Automotive Transportation to Help Save Oceans & the Environment -Toyota Presents “Ocean Hero Award” to Dr. Jeremy Jackson 2017 Mirai Fuel Cell, 2017 Prius Prime Hybrid Displays, Ride & Drive Offer Sustainable Lifestyle to Consumers Governors Island, NYC - June 2017 - The World Ocean Festival was a public event held this weekend to support The Ocean Conference at UN Headquarters in New York City happening this week - where heads of state, ministers, marine experts, civil society and the business community will gather to discuss the rapidly deteriorating health of the world’s ocean and what needs to be done to save it. This all leads up to World Ocean Day on June 8 where as part of its partnership with The Global Brain, Toyota is the automotive sponsor of the UN World Ocean Festival this past weekend and the UN Conference from June 5 through June 9. The Festival hosted a boat parade in the New York Harbor, which aimed to promote conservation and sustainable use of the world’s oceans. To celebrate the occasion, a festival was held at Picnic Point on Governors Island. Attendees spoke with the various exhibitors and joined in the activities focused around water and our world’s oceans. Toyota had the Mirai and Prius Prime on display as well as a Ride & Drive for both vehicles as well as an eco-friendly succulent planting activity. The people of New York City and all over the world were invited to join the World Ocean Festival activities, which included: • A public Ocean March in New York City’s waterways in cooperation with the U.S. Coast Guard and the New York Police Department Harbor Unit. • A public Ocean Village celebrating art, education, innovation and tools for action in support of the Ocean. The Village took place in Gantry State Park in Long Island City, New York overlooking the East River. The City of New York and The Global Brain were joined by leaders in ocean conservation, advocacy, and sustainable development our Founding Partners Ocean Elders, Mission Blue, and Oceanic, as well Core Supporters including Peace Boat, Connect4Climate, Ocean Collectiv and NGO Committee of Sustainable Development. The event was made possible by support from Founding Sponsor Toyota USA, creator of the Mirai fuel cell vehicle. New York City has shown a history of leadership in supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals through its One New York program. Launched on April 22, 2015, “One New York: The Plan for a Just and Strong City” is an innovative blueprint for the City’s future that focuses on four interdependent visions: growth, equity, sustainability, and resiliency.
